Ford Motor Company made huge gains in 2016, and this year it wants to expand its global footprint and give back.
The American car company’s City Solutions team is working with municipalities around the world to help solve rising mobility concerns in urban areas, with an emphasis on gridlock and air pollution.
“This is an issue that goes far beyond congestion. It is one that represents a massive challenge to mankind, one that affects our well-being and access to health care, clean drinking water, food, a safe place to live and even the ability to find work,” said executive chairman of Ford Motor Company, Bill Ford. “By solving the mobility challenge, we have the chance to create a better world for future generations. It’s both an exciting opportunity and a big responsibility.”
What is Ford’s City of Tomorrow?
The project will focus on short-term mobility advances such as autonomous and electric cars, ride-sharing, ride-hailing and connected vehicles, especially how they relate to urban infrastructure and how well they produce a viable transportation ecosystem. For example, Ford is visualizing a world where reconfigurable roads are not only possible, but they will fluidly and rapidly respond to drivers’ needs and traffic flow.
